November

National Animal Shelter
Appreciation Month

During this Thanksgiving season we all begin to visualize the many things we have to be thankful for in our everyday lives. Even in harsh economic times we all have many thanksgivings. Our four legged companions are many times forgotten amongst the holiday shuffle. November has been deemed National Animal Shelter Appreciation Month to bring these helpless creatures to the forefront during an otherwise busy time.

The homeless animals of our community are thankful to have Happy Hills Animal Foundation, Inc. on their side. Cheryl Routh opened her home and heart to these homeless and many times forgotten pets in the early 1980’s. The need was so great that the Happy Hills shelter/rescue was built to offer a safe place for these unwanted animals until a loving home could be found for them.

Twenty-five plus years and thousands of paws have taken an extreme toll on the Happy Hills shelter facility. Major renovations are now underway. Happy Hills Animal Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit animal rescue that receives no public funding to help with their work. The financial support for day to day operating costs as well as the renovations comes directly from caring individuals like you.

Vincent van Gogh once said “Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.”

During this month of animal shelter appreciation Happy Hills would like to present a challenge to our community to keep the needs of our homeless animal population in the forefront of our minds and hearts.

Youth Involvement

A New Generation
 In
Animal Welfare

The pet overpopulation explosion is a problem that animal welfare groups like HHAF have been at war against for many years. This war is being won one battle at a time through spay/neuter programs and humane education. Happy Hills is a firm believer in the fact that the youth of today will become the pet owners and animal advocates of tomorrow. It is our obligation to educate and guide these youth toward responsible attitudes concerning animal ownership and care.

The HHAF mission addresses this challenge. A working relationship with many youth based programs is one way of meeting this goal. Some of these coordinated efforts include programs with the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, Public High School senior project students, Public elementary school students, Church youth groups including Sunday school and Bible School classes, Randolph County Juvenile Court System, Future Farmers of America Chapter, and New Beginnings Youth Home.

Through volunteer programs that focus on youth involvement HHAF is taking an active role in building positive and responsible attitudes in our youth to carry on for generations.

Dog Fest

Happy Hills was happy to be able to participate in the 11th annual Dog Fest held again in Level Cross, NC. This wonderful yearly event is sponsored by the Randolph County Canine Corps.
Dog Fest is an event used to educate and entertain families along with their dogs while raising money to help local dog and dog related groups.  A day to spend with your dog that is centered around demonstrations and games that directly involve your dog.  Also it is a venue to possibly find your new best friend represented by rescue groups exhibiting dogs for adoption.

The dogs and volunteers from Happy Hills had a wonderful day at this year's Dog Fest. Our dogs participated in the rescue parade, obedience competion, musical fast sit competion as well as just lounging around in the fall sunshine enjoying all the attention that they recieved from the public that attended.

Long Term Care

Happy Hills was founded in 1982. Over the years many things have changed but one thing has always remained constant. That is a Life Long commitment to the animals in our care. We currently have 54 animals in our program.

60 percent of the current population of the HHAF shelter have been residents for 1 year or longer. These long term residents require routine care in addition to care given during normal intake. This additional care includes but is not limited to monthly heartworm preventive, monthly flea preventive, annual vaccinations, required rabies booster shots, semiannual de-worming, dental cleaning and extractions, special diets, maintence medications, and more.

We know from experience that there is a home for everyone at the shelter. Some just take longer to find that special home than others.

The care and quality of life for these long term residents is foremost in our minds as we are sure it is yours.

Iams

Home 4 the Holidays

Happy Hills Animal Foundation, Inc. is again proud to be participating in the Iams Home 4 the Holidays Campaign. No one enjoys thinking about images of the homeless faces behind bars during the holiday season. Every animal deserves a home for the holidays and a loving family to share that home with.

We have set a goal of placing 20 dogs and 10 cats into loving homes before the New Year. This goal is well underway with 6 dog and 2 cat adoptions at the end of October.

Help us reach our goal by considering adding a rescued pet to your family.

 Featured Pet
of the Month

Happy Hills is proud to introduce Crinkle as our pet of the month. Crinkle is a rat terrier mix female who is full of personality. She is 5 years old and loves carrying her toys around everywhere she goes. Crinkle was adopted from HHAF as a young puppy 5 years ago. She has been returned to our shelter in hopes of finding a new family. She loves her toys and enjoys lounging in the warm shunshine. Crinkle gets along well with other dogs that are not dominate. She prefers a dog companion that allows her to do her "own thing". She is a very affectionate girl that showers her humans with love.  Crinkle would do best in a home with adults and teenage children as smaller children tend to make her a bit nervous.
