Donations
All - Time Low
Expenses
SkyRocketing

In 1982 Cheryl Routh started Happy
Hills Animal Foundation, Inc. in hopes of a better option for the homeless
animals of her community. For the past 26 years this dream has been made
possible by donations, sponsorships and volunteers.
Happy Hills like many other non-profit organizations
across our country has been struggling with dwindling donations and
skyrocketing expenses. The HHAF shelter is currently caring for 54 dogs
and cats. In slow economic times it is not unsually to experience a higher
number of animals in need and lower adoption rates.
In a world with gas and grocery prices rising higher with
the passing of each day, families are forced to cutback. Uncertain times
create a period of slower adoptions. In addition to our adoption rates being low
our return-intake rate has increased steadily in the past two months.
We find ourselves reaching out to a community for help in
these trying times. Private donors, sponsors and volunteers have made HHAF what it is today and we
need your support in order to continue our much needed work into the
future.
No matter what your situation is. . . it is your
willingness to help that is important.

Animal Returns On The Rise
Happy Hills Animal Foundation, Inc. is commited to each
and every pet that is brought into our program. This commitment does not
stop with an adoption into a new family. Our foundation has not strayed
from our orginial mission of finding forever homes for each and every
resident. This commitment is for the entire lifetime of the pet.
During the past six months
we have seen a large influx of previously adopted HHAF pets being returned
to our care. Many have been returned because of No fault of their own.
Families are often torn between rising living costs, human health issues
or home foreclosures and the care of loved family pets. Families have
had no choice but return pet companions after many years. (5, 8 and 10
years).

awesome animals that are once again searching for a new loving

existing board members from our large pool of members and volunteers. the Board plans to continue to provide the same quality animal care as we have in the past, continue to find new ways of funding our efforts, continue to rescue and place many unwanted companion animals with their "forever" families, as well as strive to overcome the everyday obstacles that stand in the way of our mission. We welcome the knowledge, diligence,
support, and compassion that the new board of directors bring to Happy

Mojo's Miracle Meet
Mojo.... He is a small
gray/white purebred Italian Greyhound. He was brought to the HHAF shelter
shortly after the July 4th, 2008. This little fellow was found running
down a busy street lost and confused. Mojo settled right in at our
shelter. He loves to play with his doggie friends and adores his human
caretakers. During routine intake it appeared that Mojo had
lost sight in his left eye. After more detailed examination by a
veterinarian it was determined Mojo would be better served by
having his left eye removed. Within a couple of weeks of his intake
he underwent surgery where his eye was removed, a skin lesion
was removed, a dental cleaning and several teeth were extracted. Mojo has
recovered with remarkable speed and doesn't let his partial loss of
sight slow him down at all. He can be found sunny in the
small dog exercise yard or curled up in his soft doggie
bed, waiting his turn for a loving family. To Help With

Long Term
Care
Happy Hills was founded in 1982. Over
the years many things have changed but one thing has always
remained constant. That is a Life Long commitment to the animals in our
care. We currently have 54 animals in our program.
60 percent of the current population of the HHAF shelter
have been residents for 1 year or longer. These long term residents
require routine care in addition to care given during normal intake.
This additional care includes but is not limited to monthly heartworm
preventive, monthly flea preventive, annual vaccinations, required rabies
booster shots, semiannual de-worming, dental cleaning and extractions,
special diets, maintence medications, and more.
We know from experience that there is a home for everyone
at the shelter. Some just take longer to find that special home than
others.
The care and quality of life for these long term residents
is foremost in our minds as we are sure it is yours.

Thank you for your support of the
animals and mission of HHAF.
Shasta
Success
Story

Shasta is a 3 year old Cocker
Spaniel that is full of life and energy. The beautiful face that you see
above is far from what we found when we arrived at the Randolph County
Animal Control Shelter to pick him up. What we found there was an
emaciated and hairless little dog that looked more like a skeleton than a
dog. His bleeding body was covered with sores and generalized skin
infection from severe sarcoptic mange. Both eyes were ravaged from
infection as well as both ears. This little fellow was shivering from
fever as his tiny body was working overtime trying to fight
off parasites and an overall body infection.

Shasta has been a real
trooper. His tail has never stopped wagging even with all the dips,
medicated baths, oral medications, eye drops, and mulitiple trips to the
vet's office. Three months later he has been released by our vet and is now
ready for a loving stable family to share his love of life
with.

Shasta made remarkable
progress during his recovery. Unfortunately the neglect that left him
suffering in such a poor condition also has left him blind in one eye and
with limited vision in his other eye. This in no way slows him down! He
loves to play with his toys in the yard and enjoys taking walks with his
human caretakers.

Re-Construction Update Easter Sunday 2004 proved to
be the most devastating day in HHAF history. A fire broke out in the early
night hours. With the rising sun the
staff found all animals rescued and safe, although the office, house,
storage areas, as well as both cattery buildings were
destroyed.Struggles with the insurance
company forced HHAF to hire a lawyer to recieve a settlement. After 2
years and 9 months a settlement was recieve for "pennies on the dollars"
compared to our actual losses. A sum of $51,689 less lawyer fees of
$25,000 was recieved. A great deal of the remaining sum was
immediately paid out to settle outstanding debts that had been
incurred during the settlement process. (medical costs, veterinary
costs, supplies, to name a few) The rebuilding
process has been slow but steady. A new double cattery with an
enclosed porch area is now located in the large field overlooking the
countryside. An Isolation building
containing seperate dog and cat isolation rooms as well as an additional
laundry area is now complete and functional. Indoor bathroom facility
with handwashing area is complete. Our office and visitation
area has been remodeled and will be complete within a week or two. This
includes new flooring, walls, and doors as well as a bright new paint
scheme. Roofing has been replaced
over the outside large dog kennels as well as new roofing over about half
of the shelter's main building. A bright new paint scheme is
being used through out the entire shelter building. This painting process
is underway. New air conditioning units
installed
Other
Projects Projects that are
currently underway at HHAF Permenant roof
structures covering the four remaining uncovered large dog
kennels
Resurfacing of remaining floors in main
shelter building
Water sealing and painting of all outside dog
kennels
Repairs and replacement of chainlink fencing and
gates.
